Codified Facial Recognition

There is an innate human tendency to interpret randomly distributed shapes and patterns as facial features. The surface of our moon is lunar terrain textured with haphazard craters, yet we as a species project a human face on it, “the man in the moon.”  Perhaps this is a byproduct of our narcissism, or maybe it helps us feel more connected with the universe. At any rate, I often find myself creating a face of some sort when I aimlessly start sketching something off the top of my head. This habit is brought to a more fully realized piece in this mixed media painting. I broke apart a piece of laminate into shards and assembled them in a free form fashion. The result insisted on resembling a face so I incorporated it into a painting.
